4/16/09 Original of the Day

Welcome to a new feature here at LEGO News, “Original of the Day.” (I wanted to call it “MOC of the Day,” but was afraid not everyone would know what that means. “MOC” stands for “My Own Creation,” aka, something built out of the imagination and not following a set of instructions.)
Anyhoo, Original of the Day will abide by the following rules:
- Must be a fan-made creation, and not by any Certified LEGO Professional. (We cover those folks too, just under a different category of blog post.)
- Must be new or fairly recent. So don’t bother looking for stuff out of the “way back” archives at Flickr or MOCpages or BrickShelf.
- Must be impressive. Size is good, but it’s not as important as the overall “cool” factor.
More often than not, the Original of the Day will probably be a representation of something out of pop culture or history that’s been recreated faithfully in LEGO form
Today’s pick is one that’s been making the blogging rounds the last few weeks, so you may have already seen it. But it’s just too darn impressive to not mention here. It’s the Battleship Yamato, and it’s the largest LEGO vessel ever built at precise Minifig scale to the real ship. It took almost six and a half years to build, and incorporates over 200,000 LEGO Bricks and elements.
The attention to detail on this thing is just staggering. See tons more pictures of it at the website of Mr. Jumpei Mitsui, the man who built it.
